Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are primarily used to prevent soil from sliding off steep slopes. Many property owners also use them when installing patios, decks, and basements.

When you hire us for your retaining wall installation, you'll work directly with our structural engineer to make sure everything will work as it should.

Tarping

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Tarping prevents mudslides by preventing water from reaching the hillside. Tarps should only be applied in emergency situations as they can damage the hillsides ecosystem and worsen the risk of mudslides in the future.

We provide free consultation whether you are experiencing mudslide issues now or would like to prevent them in the future.

Pipe and Boards

Retaining Walls

Pipe and Boards

Pipe and boards are a cost effective alternative to retaining walls. They also often require hillside grading to assist the hillside remediation.

The suitability is determined by the slope, soil contents, and depth of bedrock among other factors.

Hillside Construction Techniques

What is Hillside Grading?

Hillside grading is the process of modifying the natural slope and contour of a hillside to create a stable foundation for construction. It involves the removal or addition of soil, rocks, or other materials to achieve the desired slope and shape. Proper hillside grading is essential to ensure structural stability, prevent erosion, and mitigate landslide risks.

  • Site Evaluation: Before beginning any construction, a comprehensive site evaluation is crucial. Geotechnical engineers assess the soil composition, water drainage, and the angle of the slope. This information informs the grading plan.
  • Cut and Fill: The cut and fill method involves cutting into the hillside to create level areas (cuts) and using the excavated material to fill in lower sections (fills). This technique helps in creating flat building pads while maintaining the overall slope integrity.
  • Retaining Walls: Retaining walls are often used to support the earth in steep sections of the hillside. These walls can be made of various materials, such as concrete, stone, or timber, and they prevent soil erosion and stabilize the terrain.
  • Drainage Systems: Effective drainage systems, including French drains and swales, are essential for managing water runoff on a hillside. They prevent water from accumulating, which can lead to soil instability.

How to Build into a Hillside

When building a house on a hillside, it is crucial to hire experienced architects, engineers, and contractors who have expertise in hillside construction. They can create a customized plan that considers the unique challenges of your specific site.

It is also important to ensure that your design complements the natural surroundings and minimizes the visual impact of the construction. Hillside houses often featured tiered designs that blend seamlessly with the landscape.

A strong foundation is crucial when building on a hillside. Piers, caissons, or grade beams are commonly used to support the structure and distribute its weight evenly.

Is it Safe to Build on a Hill?

Building a house on a hill is safe when done correctly, but it comes with inherent risks that must be managed. Ultimately it depends on the hill and the desired construction. One must consider regulations, the terrain, and the required engineering. Safety considerations include:

  • Geotechnical Evaluation: A thorough geotechnical assessment helps identify potential hazards, such as landslides or soil instability, which can be mitigated with proper grading and engineering solutions.
  • Proper Drainage: Effective drainage systems are crucial to prevent water-related issues, including erosion and slope instability.
  • Engineered Structures: Constructing with safety in mind, using appropriate materials and techniques, is essential to ensure the stability of the house and its foundation.
  • Compliance with Regulations: Always adhere to local building codes and regulations, which often include specific guidelines for hillside construction to ensure safety and environmental protection.

All of the most iconic buildings were feats of both outstanding architecture and engineering. While slopes pose unique challenges for construction, they also contribute towards the beauty of the end product. Hillsides also provide fantastic views and amplified security. Omega Structural offers unbeatable value for homeowners who wish to protect their hillside home or for landowners who want to build one from scratch. Don’t lose sleep over your dream home.
